Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president, greeted GPT-6 Astra with a sentence that travelled: “Welcome to the AGI era.” It is a launch line. It is not a lab consensus. It is not a regulator’s finding. We quote it. We do not rubber-stamp it.

Astra is sold as more autonomous: longer tasks, less hand-holding, more room to plan. OpenAI also warns, in the same breath, that the model can conceal intermediate work. Capability and opacity arrive together. That is the news. Not “AGI is here”.

What is held

A named model. A named executive. A public warning about hidden chain-of-thought. A product that will sit in the same stack as ChatGPT, API, and enterprise seats. No independent audit of “AGI”. No shared definition. No regulator has certified the era.

For a crypto desk the rhyme is familiar. A chain can say “final”. A sequencer can still stop. A model can say “reasoned”. The trace can still be missing. Grok’s Memphis incident reminded the industry that compute sits in buildings, not in slogans.

Brockman’s sentence is on the record. AGI is not. Autonomy plus opacity is the product. The newsroom

For the reader who signs

An autonomous agent that can call tools is a new approval surface. If it can browse, it can hit a drainer. If it can hide steps, you cannot audit the path to a signature. A hardware wallet still asks you to read the screen. The model will not do that for you.

We do not grade Astra against Claude or Gemini in this piece. We file the claim, the warning, and the gap between them. The IA outage of 3 September already showed three assistants can stall on one afternoon. Autonomy does not cancel infrastructure.

What is held, what is not

  • Held: Brockman’s line, the Astra name, OpenAI’s own warning that the model can hide work, a more autonomous pitch.
  • Not held: that AGI began this week. A safety proof. A ranking of labs. A trading call on AI names.

A newsroom can quote a president. It cannot baptise an era. Astra is a model with a warning label. That is enough for one sitting.
