The Rennes prosecutor’s office spoke on 10 September. Four men, aged 18 to 37 and from the Paris region, were arrested on 7 and 8 September in Bandol, Paris and Sevran. They are suspected of involvement in the sequestration, on 20 April, of five members of one family in a house in Ploudalmézeau, in Finistère. The case sits “on a cryptocurrency background,” writes prosecutor Frédéric Teillet, cited by ICI. Two men were placed in pre-trial detention, the other two under judicial control. They are charged. They have not yet been tried.

20 April, in Ploudalmézeau

That morning, the grandparents, their daughter and two of her children were tied up in the house. The daughter’s partner, whom the prosecutor’s office describes as “active in cryptocurrencies,” was absent. Neighbours raised the alarm. According to Ouest-France, the gendarmes arrived around 12:15: the robbery was already over and a digital wallet had been taken. As early as 21 April, Le Télégramme put the loss at about €700,000. The September statement, as ICI and franceinfo report it, does not repeat that figure. We leave it with Le Télégramme.

Four men, two regimes

The operation mobilised forty gendarmes from the Rennes research section, the Finistère grouping and intervention units, in co-seizure with the Brest research brigade and with support from the gendarmerie’s national judicial police unit. A judicial investigation was opened in mid-June, franceinfo notes. Two of the men are charged with armed organised-gang theft, and with arrest, abduction, sequestration or arbitrary hostage-taking to obtain an order, committed in an organised gang; they were remanded. The other two are charged with participation in a criminal association and placed under judicial control. Le Télégramme, citing Teillet, adds that all had previous convictions, that one is in legal recidivism after a drugs-trafficking conviction, and that they are French nationals. The investigation continues.

This is not Atizapán: no one died. Children were nonetheless tied up. We do not describe the method, and we do not name the victims. A cold wallet is not insurance against coercion. Nothing here is custody advice, nor a story to copy.
